Transition Whidbey is a citizen’s initiative of, by and for anyone on Whidbey Island who is engaged in transitioning to a lower energy and carbon footprint way of life. Transition Whidbey isn’t causing the transition. All living systems attempt to re-stabilize themselves when challenged so we are all transitioning because, food, fuel, and energy prices are rising, climate is changing, and the economy is uncertain.
If you live on Whidbey Island and want to join the Transition Whidbey community, go to http://twhidbey.collectivex.com and register. You will be able to post and read discussions, post and be informed of events, post and read documents relevant to relocalization and let the community know of your interests, talents and visions.
Our mission is:
Catalyzing our community to work together towards greater food, fuel, energy, and economic self-reliance in response to predicted energy and resource constraints.
Our intended activities to serve this mission will be to facilitate relocalization and resilience of our food, fuel, energy, and economic systems.
Transition Whidbey will:
• identify and work together with individuals, groups, and organizations also
committed to transitioning our island to a sustainable future
• map the island’s human, organizational and natural assets
• build capacity in ways appropriate to the needs
• inform the community and its leaders of the practical implications of global energy constraints,
• facilitate formation of strong local stakeholder groups,
• coordinate a regular schedule of existing and new classes towards "reskilling" ourselves in competencies for self-reliance,
• convene community meetings for networking, information exchange, support, celebration, education, and action,
• mobilize human and financial resources to achieve our goals
• recognize and acknowledge efforts towards transitioning – individuals, families and the community,
• monitor progress towards our goal of living well as much as possible within the means of our island home
• watch the horizon for unanticipated opportunities for acceleration toward our goals
and have a great time doing it.
